Random Thoughts #63 - the "road trip" edition

Hello and welcome to yet another set of Random Thoughts from yours truly.  It has been a long and rough couple of weeks for me personally and physically and I have a lot to talk about here.  With that in mind, enjoy.

 -  The reason I called this the "road trip" edition is because I went on one last week to attend the funeral of my uncle, Clyde White.  I left a week ago early Saturday with my dad and got down there Sunday afternoon.  We came back up toward Ohio, with my mom with us, starting Wednesday and spent Thanksgiving with my aunt and uncle in Tennessee.  I finally got dropped off by my parents at home this past Friday afternoon.  Again, it was a very long trip and I was tired and driven a little stir crazy, but that's what happens on long road trips sometimes.

 -  Speaking of the funeral, once we arrived on Sunday we had to get dressed right away because that night we went to the funeral.  On Monday morning we attended another service at the cemetary.  Both services were good yet solemn.  I got to see relatives, some I haven't seen in decades, yet I wish it would have been under better circumstances.  My uncle Clyde was a great family man.  He loved trains and he could tell a tale like nobody's business.  We (the family) are all going to miss him.  Rest in peace, Uncle Clyde.

 -  As I noted before, my parents and I spent Thanksgiving with my aunt Claudia and uncle James at their home.  Their home was beautiful and the food was great (James is a hell of a cook).  Unfortunately my sinuses decided to attack me after dinner and I got really tired and a bit cranky as a result.  I want to apologize to my aunt and uncle if they were put off by that or me, especially since both of them went out of their way to make my family feel welcome.  Me personally, it meant a lot to me that they were so welcoming and I'm lucky to have such relatives in my extended family.

 -  Regarding the road trip itself, we started down I-70 and then hit I-77 south down to South Carolina.  After a couple of interstate changes, we took I-95 down to Jacksonville, then took a couple of routes through the state of Florida to get to the funeral.  We took a different route back up using I-75 to go through Georgia, stopping at Tennessee for Thanksgiving, then transferred over to I-71 in Cincinnati before I got home.  I took a few notes along the way taking notice of various things and I want to share some of those observations as I had them and generally which state I had them in or noticed things in.  I'll start with West Virginia and go from there.

West Virginia
  • There are a lot of construction merges entering West Virginia on I-77.  Maybe they should call it "West Merge-inia" instead
  • The interstate lanes seem too thin for travel.  It is very difficult to pass slower cars in the mountains as a result.
  • We stopped at an Italian restaurant called Fratello's in Ripley.  Decent food there and I got to watch some of the Ohio State-Michigan game there.  I will say this...I could have never imagined how much people in West Virginia actually hated Rich Rodriguez, the head coach of Michigan and former WVU coach, until I saw it for myself.
Virginia
  • Wycheville is the only place I know where you can have two separate interstates run together on the same stretch of highway yet have one run north and the other run south at the same time.  That can get very confusing.
North Carolina
  • Using the carpool lanes in a busy city such as Charlotte is a very nice thing especially when there's a lot of traffic on Saturday night.
Georgia (heading down)
  • After going through Savannah, there is a ton of construction on I-95 taking place.  It looks like they are rebuilding the highway completely.
Florida
  • After hitting I-75 in Ocala, it rained rather hard for about a half-hour.
  • We stopped at a 24-hour fast-food-like restaurant called Whataburger on US 301.  They have a pretty decent cheeseburger.
  • It's about 10:30 PM on Sunday night after the funeral.  I am gathering my thoughts and notes together for the blog outside where it is 70 degrees near the end of November.  I never thought I'd ever be doing that.
  • During the days here, it has been 80 degrees and sunny in Florida...can't beat that.  I'm not sure I want to leave this place.
  • I'm doing an awful lot of contemplation while I'm out of Ohio.  I have a lot to think about.
  • The signs of autumn are not apparent in Florida as it was for the other states I've travelled through on the trip.
  • I have to admit, watching two of my relatives attempting to outdo each other in a proverbial all-you-can-eat contest is a sight to behold.
  • I went to Holmes and Bradenton Beaches on Tuesday.  It's the first time I saw lots of dolphins, big sand castles, and some beautiful women in bikinis all in one trip.  I also took a look at vacation homes on Anna Maria Island and toured around some of the upscale homes on Longboat Key...there are some beautiful places here in Bradenton and Sarasota.
  • I got rather grouchy on my last night in Florida.  I think it had to do with the combination of my sinuses attacking, from getting tired from all the walking and travelling so far, and the prospect of having to head back to the much colder climate of Ohio the next day.
  • On the way out of Florida, we stopped at a place called the Villages south of Ocala.  It is a beautiful area with tons of shopping and a lot of individual golf courses, around 11 or 12 of them, each surrounded by houses and vacation homes.  For a frame of reference, think Easton Town Center in Columbus except 20 times bigger with a school district and a much warmer climate.
Georgia (coming back)
  • At the Georgia Welcome Center on I-75, truckers have to park their semis pretty far back away from the welcome center buildings while cars can park near them.  It may be just me, but I think this is probably the official "Git Your Out-Of-Shape Trucker Ass To Steppin" initiative here at work in Georgia.
  • Atlanta has been known as a traffic nightmare to many who have passed through it.  For me, the areas before the city limits and after were rather heavily congested.  However, travelling though downtown Atlanta itself was rather smooth, surprising given that it was so close to the Thanksgiving holiday and it was during the 5:00 PM rush hour when we went through the city.
Tennessee
  • My family and I stayed at a "nicey-nice" Best Western while in Knoxville, the "nicey-nice" part being the upscale business nature of the hotel itself.  I've seen some crappy Best Westerns in the past, but this one was definitely NOT one of those.
  • I'm going a bit stir crazy at this point of the trip but I'm only about six hours away from home.  However, I will be travelling on one of the busiest traffic days of the year...Black Friday.
Ohio
  • We stop at a Skyline Chili near Kings Island in Cincinnati.  I didn't realize how close Kings Island was to Columbus...I thought it would be farther away.  Anyway, this was the first time I ever went to a Skyline and didn't throw up while I was there or afterwards.  The funny thing about that is that I'm being completely serious about that.  Will wonders never cease?

And that concludes the observations and notes I took on the first road trip for me since 2001.  In some respects I wanted to stay down there but ultimately I'm glad I'm back at home.  Now to try to get into the swing of things...

 -  I was on the road while the OSU-Michigan game was happening, but I got to listen to at least half of it and watched some of it on TV while I was at a restaurant.  I am happy that the Buckeyes won the Big Ten outright and are heading to the Rose Bowl.  I just hope that the offense improves enough so that they can win a bowl game this time out.

 -  On the flip side, the Browns need an awful lot of work, especially in light of their loss to the Bengals earlier today.  They are in the search for new front office personnel, but I think they need some coaching changes as well, especially for WRs and DBs...they seem to be on different pages and missing things at crucial points in games.  I guess we'll have to wait until the end of the season for anything substantial to happen.

 -  I have to admit, being out of the loop sometimes has it's good and bad points.  I guess it comes down to when those points occur and how.

 -  Song on repeat:  "I Will Remember You" by Sarah McLachlan.  Self explanatory given the reason for the road trip.

 -  SLP to the following:  Dave, Pastor Cory, Nick (belated happy b-day), Todd (thanks for the heads-up), Bob, Lynn, Aunt Sandy, my cousins Scotty, Stacy, Walt, Steve, George, Tracy P., Aunt Susie, Uncle Tim, Aunt Claudia, Uncle James, Uncle Bill, my cousins Debbie & Betsy, Kenda, Josh (2nd cousin), Shayne (fellow nephew of Clyde), Holly, Rahn, Jay, Tammy (happy birthday), Heather (happy b-day), and the other family members I was with in Florida.

Before I go, I want to thank again those of you who said prayers to and for my family.  They really appreciated it and thank you for them.  I hope you continue to keep them, especially my aunt Sandi and my cousins, in your thoughts and prayers in this difficult time.  After going on this road trip, I find myself asking this one question:  why in the devil did I come back up to this cold weather in Ohio?  Until next time, folks.  Take care and God Bless.

Random Thoughts #62 - the "clingy" edition

Greetings and welcome to the latest set of Random Thoughts from yours truly.  I feel a little rusty in more than one way after a couple weeks off and the only way I know to combat that is to get going here.  With that in mind, enjoy.

 -  I'm calling this the "clingy" edition because of a sometimes annoying habit I have in some social situations that I finally got the chance to put some serious thought into.  Sometimes, after a quick word or a short conversation, I would sometimes linger and awkwardly hang around just a little too long for others' nerves and sometimes mine whenever I recognize it.  Usually it would be because I was bored, uncomfortable being by myself, looking for companionship at a particular time when others aren't ready or willing for it, or hoping that the other people I was around would have something more to talk about.  I've noticed such lingering and clinginess more in the past few months but it's been going on for years.  In attempting to deal with this, some have noticed other things such as me being by myself more in big crowds and me not hanging around in some places as much as I used to even when there are a lot of friends and people I know around.  Those things are the result of me trying to be more mindful of the people and the events around me and trying to put more value into all my conversations and encounters so that I don't linger around so much and subsequently get on peoples' nerves.  If I have gotten on your nerves in these circumstances, I humbly apologize.  I do suck at mind-reading and can't tell what others think at any particular moment so I go by my past experiences on what to do.  Again, I am trying to be more cognizant of what's going on around me and sometimes I can't always tell what's up.  The reason I'm talking about it here is that someone I respect called me on it recently and asked me why I do it.  At the time I didn't have an answer but I hope this blurb helps with that and that I am trying to do something about it.

 -  At this time I am dealing with a couple of anniversaries I don't particularly want to.  One is the passing of my friend Roger last year at this time and the other being me leaving Columbus 11 years ago around this time.  Before I continue here, I want to note quick that my prayers are still with Roger's wife Heather and her kids.  Even though I've been back in Columbus for some time now, both events still have significant and lingering...and, dare I say, a clinging...impact on my life and I continue to deal with the ramifications of each.  I didn't want to continue on here without noting this.

 -  My body has started going though "winterization" getting me ready for the upcoming winter months.  This is not fun for me and I hope it goes by quickly.

 -  Despite the rough patch I'm going through and the lingering stuff I've been facing, I am trying to keep my spirits up.  It hasn't been easy and I've been trying to get as much relaxation as I can to little effect, but that's what I've come to expect from this time of year.  I'm still waiting for the good things, the great times, and my calling as I noted last blog, so I am hopeful.

 -  The newest version of the sci-fi show "V" looks to be very promising.  It's moving at the same clip as the original mini-series but the special effects are much improved.  It has also been enjoyable and I hope it continues to be that.

 -  As a result of the election a couple weeks back, casinos are now slated to arrive in Ohio in about three or four years.  I don't know the impact it will have on the other current or future gambling initiatives including the bingo I currently call, but it will be interesting to watch.

 -  Last weekend I went up to the OC for the first time in a long time.  People actually didn't recognize me at first glance which was pretty funny.  I got to see a few people I haven't seen in a while including Dave, Ernest, Courtney, and Tommy D.  I did have fun but it was a weird night and it felt weird for me being there.  I did some dancing, but I noticed I'm not as into it as I once was.  I think it was because of something I realized and talked about a while back, that the club scene really wasn't for me anymore.  I'm not sure if that will stay the case, but I do know now that it probably wouldn't kill me to go out every once in a while.

 -  My church:  Crossroads World Christian Center.

 -  A couple of weeks ago I was looking at the OSU Buckeyes very critically.  Now, they are Big Ten champs for the fifth year in a row and headed to the Rose Bowl for the first time since 1997.  I still have questions about the team but since the last couple of wins I am not looking at them as critically as I did early on this college football season.  Also, it is Michigan week and unlike last year where other events took precedence I am looking forward to the Michigan game this year.

 -  The Browns have had somewhat of an eventful two weeks even though they had a bye last week.  The GM is gone and the search for a new boss is on.  Coach Eric Mangini is under the microscope even more so than before the last game.  The team is seemingly in chaos.  Throughout all that, I still support the Browns.  It would be easy to jump off and stop supporting them, but then I'd be like one of those bandwagon folks...showing superficial loyalty, only following winning teams wthout any real emotional investment, always trying to be on the "right" or "winning" side of things, acting like they've always been around when they haven't.  I just can't be that.  I grew up with the Browns and when they pull it together and start winning (they will...I have faith), that will be a time for genuine happiness.  Bandwagoners need not apply.

 -  Continuing with the Browns for a moment, they will be on Monday Night Football tomorrow night playing against the Baltimore Ravens.  The Westerville Browns Backers and I will be watching the game at Jimmy V's in uptown Westerville and Browns fans not going to the game are welcome to join us there in watching it.  I personally hope to see the so-called "protest" stunt planned for the beginning of the game blow up in the faces of the two attention-whore season ticket holders who came up with the lame-brained idea.  Shoot, I hope the announcers don't even acknowledge it.  I do hope that the Browns can somehow pull it together and pull out a win.  I don't know if that will happen, but I do have faith.

 -  I posted a Star Wars spoof video on my Facebook.  It's a follow-up to the "Star Wars Gangsta Rap" and made by the same creators.  It's pretty funny, so if you're on Facebook check it out.

 -  Song on repeat:  "Down" by Jay Sean.  The first new-ish song I've liked in a while, I've been listening to it a lot over the past couple of weeks.

 -  SLP to the following:  Dave, Pastor Cory, Bob, Lynn, Todd, Laura, Holly, Rita (belated happy birthday), my dad (happy b-day), Heather, Ernest, Tommy D, Shane, Harry, Courtney, Jessica, Jack, Andrea, Uncle Bill (happy birthday), and Sonya.

That's it for this edition of Random Thoughts.  I'm not sure I'm gonna do the blogging every week as I have been for the past year as activities and personal events and things have slowed somewhat.  It might still be every week, but it could be two or three weeks between blogs at times.  I'm not making any concrete decisions about that at this point, so all I will say is that if I have stuff I'll get it out there.  Until next time.  Take care and God Bless.

Random Thoughts #61 - the "karmic" edition

Hello once again and welcome to my latest set of Random Thoughts.  I don't have much this week but I have a couple things to talk about, so with that in mind...enjoy.

 -  The reason I am calling this the "karmic" edition is because of an upgrade of my computer's operating system.  I am now using the "Karmic Koala" 9.10 version of Ubuntu Linux.  I beta-tested it a few months back and it was glitchy.  The latest so-called "stable" version, while up and running and using less CPU, still has glitches that need ironed out.  I do not have a background pic on my desktop, only a black background.  I am still having trouble with the desktop effects...sometimes they work and sometimes they don't.  Other stuff is either working slow or still glitchy.  I had to upgrade because once Karmic Koala was released, the update site stopped being able to update the version I was using, 9.04 (they got some weird designations for their individual operating systems).  Even now updating is spotty...when I can get them.  I think Canonical, the people overseeing Ubuntu, fumbled here with the release of Karmic because there is obviously a lot of work that still needed to be done before releasing this so-called "stable" version.  I know I still have to upgrade some of my components but the issues I have don't have anything to do with what I need upgraded.  Bad karma.

 -  Yesterday I started doing bingo calling for my church.  It was an interesting experience and one I'm going to repeat on Monday night at the place we're using as a bingo hall and a church facility.  This is something I will be doing a couple times a week for the foreseeable future unless I get a job that interferes with it.

 -  Speaking of my church, here's a plug for it:  Crossroads World Christian Center ministered by Pastor Cory Pariseau.

 -  The only saving grace for the Cleveland Browns right now is that they have a bye week next week.  The defense and special teams are okay, but the offense absolutely stinks.  There may be some personnel changes in the next two weeks on the offensive side of the ball.  At least I hope there are.

 -  Despite the record of the Browns, the Westerville Browns Backers still have a decent crowd show up to watch the games at Jimmy V's in Westerville, whether it has been to cheer about what's going on...a rare thing this season...or commiserate and vent about the losses and boneheaded plays.  Browns fans are more than welcome to join us in doing either thing there and hopefully starting with the Monday night game in two weeks we will have more to cheer about.

 -  Speaking of the Monday night game, there are plans for a "protest" by a couple of season ticket holders in the Dawg Pound at the beginning of the game.  I put the word protest in quotation marks because the idea these two are promoting has to be one of the single dumbest ideas ever used for consideration as a protest.  The idea was for fans to not be in the stands for the kickoff of the game, which is supposed to air on national television...that's it.  First of all, at most games a lot of people aren't in their seats at the time of kickoff anyway, so that means nothing.  Second, the seats are already paid for, so where's the gain there?  It's also just for one play...big whoop.  This idea came about from a guy with the nickname of "Dawg Pound Mike" who thought this would actually work.  Dawg Pound Mike, to his credit, helped campaign against the move of the old team to Baltimore and is a season ticket holder who's unhappy about how the Browns are doing.  However he is known by many to be an attention-seeking glory hound out for his own interests and he came up with some flimsy justifications for coming up with this as a protest.  As embarassing as the Browns have been for a while now, this stunt disguised as a protest will make the Browns fans themselves a laughingstock if it is gone through with.  The only reason it made news at all is that he went to a reporter, Marla Ridenour, who's known for having it in for the team and she ran with it in the Akron Beacon Journal.  Fortunately many are starting to push back against this stunt because they know that there are better ways to air grievances and they recognize this stunt for what it is...a stupid idea from a glory seeker.  Lord, I hope this stunt doesn't take place.

 -  All I'm gonna say about the OSU Buckeyes is that they had an easy game yesterday and that they have to win out in order to win the Big Ten title and a spot in the Rose Bowl.

 -  Election Day is happening this upcoming Tuesday, November 3rd.  If you haven't voted yet by absentee, then don't forget to do so on Tuesday wherever you may be.

 -  Song on repeat:  "These Dreams" by Heart.  The only reason this was the one on repeat is because this was the song I used to test for sound after upgrading my OS and not getting any sound right away.  I do have that working though, thank the Lord.

 -  SLP to the following:  Shadow, Pastor Cory, April, Tammy, Lynn, Debbie, Mike Bettes, Dave, Patrick, Mindy, Joe C. (thanks for putting up with me), and Walt.

A quick announcement before I end this today:  like the Browns I am going to take next weekend off and return with a new set of Random Thoughts in a couple of weeks unless something major happens for me this upcoming week.  I will definitely have stuff to talk about then because of a couple of personal anniversaries for me and other time sensitive stuff.  Until next time, folks.  Take care and God Bless.
