Random Thoughts #60 - the "calling" edition

Greetings once again from me.  It's been somewhat of a slow week, but I do have stuff on my mind.  With that in mind, so to speak, enjoy.

 -  I have finally done it...after two and a half years I have left Myspace as of last Friday.  Most of my friends are on Facebook now, so if anybody is looking for me on the internet, send them my way via Facebook.

 -  Speaking of Facebook, why do they seem to put out changes that nobody wants yet the ones that are most necessary and most asked for stay ignored?  I think Facebook needs to hire more people who are actually responsive and accurately listening to what user want and ask for...it doesn't seem like they have too many of those types at the moment.

 -  As you've already noticed, I've named today's edition the "calling" edition.  Before I start talking about that, I want to say now that I'm not sure this is going to come across here the way it does in my mind and may seem confusing and rambling at times.  Bear with me because it's something I've not talked about formally before and it is a subject matter that is somewhat....embarassing is not the word I want to use here, but it's something close and I don't know if I'll get out all that I want to get out.  I'm in my mid to late 30's, I have a good idea of who and what I am as a person and sometimes a social being, and I have a general idea where I stand on many fronts.  However, one thing that has long eluded me for most of my life is whether I have a calling in it.  I'm not talking about a purpose in life here.  I already know I want to do good, work within the greater good, and help wherever I can...that's not in doubt.  Questions I ask myself regarding this include "is there something that is beckoning me to action that I'm not getting yet" and "am I where I need to be to do the things I must?"  Those are two common ones but there is one that I get asked and still ask myself:  "what do you want to do with your life?"  To be completely honest, I don't really know and I never really have known, even now.

It's not for lack of trying, whether it be putting it in the Lord's hands, putting it in the hands of the people around me such as friends and family, or trying to do it on my own.  I have gone from job to job, taking my time in-between jobs to sort things out, trying to make as much of a living as I can, returned to college and got my degree, moved around to find the best place to make a living, learning as many different skills as I'm able to, taking tons of advice from people...I've done an awful lot just in trying to find that "calling", but here I am still with the questions.  When something like this is brought up in social conversation and especially when it regards me, I'm at a loss.  I hem and haw around it, sometimes giving answers in the hope that people will just want to stop talking about it.  As uncomfortable as this is for me, I have tried to bring it up myself several times to some people, but generally it's when I'm not prepared to deal with what they have to say because I'm so uncomfortable with the subject.  I guess the best description of where I am in all of this is something I got from the first Zorro movie with Antonio Banderas:  I am a man in search of a vision...or calling, as the case may be even though I'm not sure there's something tangible for me to look for right now.

I admire those who do have that calling and follow it and also those who already just "know" what it is they're getting out of life or knowing the path they want to follow.  Given that admiration, there are some historically that I have encountered...not recently but from time to time...that whenever this comes up as a subject, they come across as though they take it for granted, like they expect everybody should naturally or already have it.  When I'm talking with these folks and they notice the disparity between where they're at and where I'm at, they seem so dumbfounded as to why, and I quote here, I'm "not doing anything about it" or "doing this" or "doing that" and start getting critical.  Backhanded compliments and insults accompany some of this criticism, with them calling me lazy, unmotivated, even stupid and a coward...that's just a taste of what I've had to put up with and I feel like less of a human being after being around them.  Sometimes I just want to proverbially hit them upside the back of their heads just to show them that they don't get it or maybe even get me, but I digress.  I try to be understanding of and patient with them even when they're not, but it's difficult.

There are a few reasons I'm sharing this today.  One is that a couple of my friends seem to be facing changes in and challenges to either their callings or the paths in where they see their lives are going.  I admire them for facing what they feel they have to and wanted them to know I support them in whatever paths they choose.  Second, remember when I wrote about those two "longstanding problems" that got combined into one from the end of last year and the first part of this year?  Well, this was it...this was the big "combined" problem that was vexing me...finding my calling and my path.  This has been a big undercurrent in my life for years now dating back to my teens.  Events happened last year that changed a lot of things for me and really got me to start thinking about this in ways that were both good and bad for me at the same time.  I'm not gonna go into specifics here but at the time I wasn't capable of bringing anything about this to light without it causing some major ripples in too many areas of my life and that of others.  At several times in my life this has been a problematic thing, one that I have not had any real answers for or any to give, and as a result I've had to step back or step completely away.  The end of last year was one of those times.  Third, if I didn't talk about it now, then when?  I knew in my heart that I would eventually have to put words to this in order to face what I needed to face and I finally mustered up enough courage to get this out in the open so I can hopefully start dealing with this more effectively.  Now, I'm not asking for any input or help right now in this nor do I want any at this point because it's hard enough just to talk about.  If I need it I will ask for it.  The fourth and final reason I'm putting this here is that after a year of big changes, the next year may have even bigger changes in store for me and I wanted to note it now so I wouldn't forget later.  I have a vague vision of what some of those changes might entail but nothing I'm willing to share just yet...you'll have to wait for that.

 -  That was a long-winded blurb.  Take a breath here before going on.

 -  A quick plug for my church:  Crossroads World Christian Center ministered by Pastor Cory Pariseau.  A quick note here:  I have agreed to become a caller for bingo at the church.  Not everything is set in stone just yet because apparently there are things that still need worked out (not on my end), but I'm hoping this gets going soon.

 -  On Monday, scheduled for WTTE 28 was the Steelers/Vikings game earlier today.  After me calling (there's that word again) and other people contacting the station, by Tuesday we were able to get the Browns/Packers game on instead.  I'm not sure that all the effort was worth it because...........

 -  Let's face it, the Cleveland Browns stink.  I am a fan and I still support them, but I can't avoid the fact that there is a lot of work that needs done with this team in order to make something of this season.  A lot of people think it's because of the head coach, but I think they're putting way too much on him and not enough on the other coaches and many of the players themselves, especially the running backs, the wide receivers and the defensive backs.  Head coach Eric Mangini just got hired this season and he's being ripped to shreds in the media...to me he probably only deserves maybe half of what he's getting in the criticism department, but he is a convenient scapegoat.  The funny thing is that there are actually three or four other teams that are tangibly doing much worse than the Browns right now.

 -  On the flip side, the OSU Buckeyes looked a lot better against Minnesota yesterday.  If they win the rest of their games, they win the Big Ten title and likely a berth in the Rose Bowl.  Lose just one and they are out of the Big Ten title picture.  Now, if only Terrelle Pryor can learn how to make defensive reads and adjustments...

 -  I watched the latest South Park episode titled "WTF."  It was a wrestling-themed episode.  For those of you who watched it, I should tell you that there are actually people out there who truly believe that wrestling is EXACTLY how the boys portrayed it in the episode.  I met several of them at a PPV years ago...believe me, that is just too freaky.

 -  Song on repeat:  "Bang A Gong (Get It On)" by T. Rex.  Originally made in 1971, it got into my head after watching the G.I. Joe movie.  The hook from it was used in a different song during one of the training sequences.

 -  SLP to the following:  Jermaine, Dave, Holly, Chris H., Cheryl (happy birthday), my cousin Scotty (again, happy birthday), my aunts Susie, Sandi, & Claudia (happy birthday, all), Laura & Todd (congrats), Shadow (thanks for the kind words), Daryl, Eugene, George, and Pastor Cory.

This blog has been sort of taxing and I'm hungry, so I'm gonna take off now.  I'll be back soon with another set of Random Thoughts, so until then....take care and God Bless.

Random Thoughts #59 - the "moving" edition

Hello and welcome to my latest set of Random Thoughts.  Autumn is in full swing and so am I, so let's get to it, shall we?  Enjoy.

 -  I have an announcement to make regarding me and Myspace.  Within the next week or two, I will be completely shutting down my Myspace account.  I have been using Facebook and will use it pretty much exclusively from now on as my primary social network.  Quite frankly, Myspace has gotten to the point where it's slowed to a crawl for me and subsequently I don't use it that much anymore.  I've actually been copying my Random Thoughts blogs from a Blogger account I set up a few months ago.  With the lack of activity there and some of the hassles that Myspace has been creating (especially with linking to other sites), I've decided this was the time to make the move from Myspace to Facebook, hence the "moving" edition.  I've had an interesting two and a half year run on Myspace, but it's time for me to move on.  As a result, this will be the last blog entry I'll be posting on Myspace.  Like I said before, I do have a Blogger account set up at http://djsrandomthoughts.com and from now on will be posting there with links to the individual editions of my Random Thoughts on Facebook whenever I blog, which I've been doing for a while now.  I've already linked up with a lot of people from Myspace on Facebook already (all of you will be acknowledged in SLP later on), so the majority of the moving is actually done.  I've still got about three pending friend requests on Facebook, but there's still about four or five people I haven't been able to account for just yet from Myspace...this is the reason I'm keeping the Myspace account open for another week or so...long enough for those folks to hit me up on Facebook if they have accounts there.

 -  Quick note:  I have been having some computer issues related to my power supply.  When I get some extra cash I'll replace it, but there may be times I'm limited online.  If there's any major disruptions for me, I'll announce them on Facebook.

 -  This was a rough weekend for the teams I support.  The Buckeyes didn't look like they came to play yesterday and it showed with a loss.  My comments about Terrelle Pryor from the last blog were really applicable to the Purdue game.  My Browns today....well, even though they lost, they showed up to play and looked improved in the game against the Steelers.  They still have a lot of work to do, but they have something to work with.  The referees did a horrible job today, blowing a bunch of calls on both teams and making the game more frustrating than it probably should have been.

 -  I watched WWE Raw last week and both Nancy O'Dell and Maria Menunos seemed to fit into the broadcast as guest hosts.  They did an excellent job and were probably the most natural of any of the guest hosts so far.  Don't be surprised to see them back in that role sometime in the future.

 -  I read recently that both the Powerball and Mega Millions will be available in all of the states each one serves.  Both agreed to a cross-selling agreement starting sometime next year where both games will be played in any state that wants to do both.  This will probably lead to some type of national lottery in the future if they ever decide to merge.  I don't know if Ohio will be part of the Powerball lottery (it's up to individual states whether or not to participate in the program), but with the casino initialtive on the ballot in November, Ohio seems to be getting swept up in gambling fever.

 -  A small thing that perked me up:  early last week I noticed something missing from one of my Firefox extensions that I had disabled and tried to re-enable.  I wrote to the developer about it and later on that day I got a response AND an update that included the missing item, which then got posted to the official Firefox extension site a day or so later.  It made me feel good that even on something that in the bigger picture may not have a grand significance, my concern was addressed and swiftly dealt with...makes me feel good I had a positive impact on something.

 -  A plug for my church:  Crossroads World Christian Center.

 -  Saturday was apparently Sweetest Day.  I didn't pay that much attention to it until some people said something about it on Facebook.  Frankly, I never got why there was a Sweetest Day.  Valentine's Day pretty much serves the same purpose, so why have another holiday?  Apparently it's been around since the 1920's but to me this just seems like a scheme by the greeting card companies to inflate their bottom line and move some product.  This is something I just don't get as to why it exists...oh well.

 -  Song on repeat:  "Movin' Out" by Billy Joel.  Pretty descriptive for what I've been doing recently online.

 -  SLP to the following:  Marcus D., Joe C., Mike Lianez, Al (FINODI), Shadow, Jessica, Maggie, Joe Dawg Brother, Dani, Chad M., Adrian, Eldina, Pastor Cory, Tatjana, Ryan, Carlos, Jen K., Roger B., Nick, Holly, Karen, my cousin Debbie, George (happy birthday), Michael Tan (happy b-day), Xavier, Cheryl, my cousin Jamie, Dave, Rahn, Andrea, Mindy, Art, Tommy D, and my Aunt Claudia & Uncle James (my prayers are with you both).

That's it for this week and for my blog presence on Myspace.  Again, for those of you that I haven't contacted or talked to yet from Myspace, hit me up on Facebook with a friend request so I can add you there and we can keep in touch.  From now on I'll be on Blogger with my Random Thoughts, so you can find me there too.  Until next time, folks.  Take care and God Bless.

Random Thoughts #58 - the "game" edition

Hello there, fellow internet users and readers of my blogs, and welcome to yet another set of random thoughts from me.  It's a good day to blog, so let's get to it.  Enjoy.

 -  The subtitle for this week's edition, "game," is more of a running theme this week for various reasons, as you will see in several of the upcoming blurbs.

 -  Before I get to the Browns, I want to make a comment on the trade of Braylon Edwards to the NY Jets.  Some people have argued that he was too talented to let go of and that we fans should just give up now on the season.  Now, I agree that Braylon was talented and a decent downfield blocker, but his job is to catch the ball which was something out of all of his time as a Cleveland Brown he only did somewhat decently in 2007.  Overall, he dropped too many passes from different quarterbacks and came off like a diva.  An incident last Monday morning sealed his fate and he got shipped out.  Frankly, I'm glad he's gone.  It's one thing to have talent but it's another to actually do something with it consistently, which he didn't with the Browns.  He's no longer on the team and I'm happy we don't have to deal with somebody who comes off like a horse's ass anymore.

 -  The Browns finally won a game for the first time in a long time.  They beat the Bills 6-3 and it was ugly.  They pulled it out at the end and I'm happy about that.  They've gotta lot of work to do, especially in the passing game (23 yards?  Come on...), with the Steelers coming up next game.  It's gonna be tough next week in Pittsburgh.

 -  We did get the game on at Jimmy V's and a big crowd showed up with standing room only early on.  However, due to some complications with Direct TV we didn't get the game on until the beginning of the second quarter.  As a representative of the Westerville Browns Backers, I want to humbly apologize to those of you who came up expecting to watch the beginning of the game and couldn't due to the technical issues, especially those of you who left before we were able to get the game on.  I thank those of you who were patient enough to stay while everything was being straightened out, especially since we got to see our Brownies win today.  All the issues have been straightened out and this should not happen again, especially if we have another local TV scheduling conflict.  Again, to those who were miffed I apologize.

 -  Yesterday, the OSU Buckeyes beat a very tough Wisconsin team.  They did it with a couple of interceptions for touchdowns and a return for one as well.  The offense, especially QB Terrelle Pryor, still needs some work.  Pryor especially needs to work on reading defenses and making adjustments.  I thought Wisconsin might be the toughest team they play this year, even with the loss to USC.  However, the Bucks pulled it out.  I just hope they win out and win the Big Ten title.

 -  We have an big election coming up on November 3rd here in Ohio.  There are three statewide issues on the ballot:  a bill to add casinos to Ohio (a big inspiration for the subtitle this week), a bill on livestock standards, and a bill to give bonuses to veterans of wars who live in the state.  Locally, there's a Children's Services levy here in Franklin County and various races and candidates to vote on including those running for Columbus City Council and the Board of Education.  Early voting is up and running in Franklin County at the board of elections headquarters, but wherever you live if you want to vote early, contact your own local board of elections for how to do so.  In any case, don't forget to vote on or before November 3rd here in Ohio.

 -  My church home:  Crossroads World Christian Center.

 -  Last week I watched a documentary on Woodstock and how much of a phenomenon it was.  I was wondering if something like that...a big concert with hundreds of thousands, maybe even millions, of people...could ever happen in our lifetimes?  Also, if so, would any of you go to one if it ever happened?

 -  Song on repeat:  "Only Hope" by Mandy Moore.  A song from the movie "A Walk To Remember," there are two different tracks on how it works for me.  One track is that it is a prayer song, in how I see myself worshipping the Lord.  On another track, it is a romantic serenade that I would eventually like to express to that woman who's my true love but I haven't found just yet...and yes, before you ask, I do believe in that stuff, I am a romantic and I'm an optimist.

 -  SLP to the following:  Holly, my cousins Debbie and Betsy, Russ (happy birthday), George, Pastor Cory, Jennifer K. (congrats on the new baby), Karen, Dan (happy b-day), and my fellow Westerville Browns Backers.

My mood and fortunes seem to be improving, but until more stuff gets settled and some things get straightened out in my life and in my head, I'm not gonna write about them until they actually happen.  I am feeling pretty good right now especially with all the wins this weekend.  Thank you for reading and until next time, folks.  Take care and God Bless.

Random Thoughts #57 - the "antithesis" edition

Hello and welcome to my latest set of random thoughts.  I'm finally back on my regular schedule again so I'm ready to go here.  With that in mind, enjoy.

 -  I'm calling this particular edition the "antithesis" edition.  Antithesis implies a contrast or a diametric opposite to something.  As low and down and out as I have been for a while now, this past week has been an antithesis or contrast to that for me.  Things are improving in different areas...not all of them but some.  On top of that, my mood has been elevated a bit and I'm feeling a bit better overall.  Nice change of pace, if I do say so myself.  I've also noticed some antithetical things this week, some of which I'll note later on in the blog.

 -  Summer is gone now and autumn is here.  I actually had to do something that I haven't had to since around May...I had to break out a jacket.  I got so used to not having to wear one that doing so came as a shock.  I wasn't ready for summer to leave just yet, but alas, fall is here so I guess I'd better get used to it...at least until next year.

 -  One of those antithetical contrasts from this past week happened earlier in the Browns-Bengals match-up.  The Browns looked pretty good out there even though they lost a heartbreaker at the end of overtime.  Today they came to play and it looked like for a while that they might take it.  Given that they played poorly the past few weeks, this was definitely a good change of pace and I hope they keep it up for next week and beyond.

 -  Speaking of next week, if you live in the Columbus OH area, the Browns-Bills matchup will not be televised in the area because Channel 10 will be airing the Bengals-Ravens game instead.  That means to watch the game people in the area will have to go to a sports bar or restaurant to watch it.  Jimmy V's in uptown Westerville WILL HAVE the Browns-Bills game on next week, so for you Columbus folks looking for a spot to watch you can join me and the rest of the Westerville Browns Backers at Jimmy V's next Sunday.  It's a 1:00 PM game, so you might want to get up there early to grab a seat.  We had a decent crowd today and we are expecting a big one for this upcoming game.

 -  I watched the Buckeyes last night and they looked pretty good out there.  I haven't really watched them since the USC game, but I'm glad I caught it yesterday.  I was impressed with them against Indiana.  Let's hope the rest of the season is just as good.

 -  Keeping with the football motif, the upstart United Football League kicks off this upcoming Thursday night on the channel "Versus."  The first game will have the Las Vegas Locomotives (Locos for short...probably means their crazy nuts) versus the California Redwoods at about 9:00 PM EST.  This is the first attempt at a pro league since the failed XFL, but with former NFL personnel running things it may have a better shot at survival.  Also with a potential NFL lockout in a couple of years, this may be the only pro league playing in 2011...or maybe even 2010 if NFL owners don't want to deal with an uncapped year.

 -  Another antithesis I found was something I watched on the Today Show last Wednesday morning.  It's a veggie burger topped with strips of bacon called the "Hypocrite Burger."  Pretty big contrast in my view.

 -  Hulu finally got the anime "Robotech" on it's site, starting with all the episodes of the Macross Saga.  If Hulu puts up the Southern Cross and Invid Invasion seasons on there, I'll be a happy camper.

 -  In the Columbus Dispatch today there was a story about "Olde North Columbus" which the city of Columbus is trying to promote as a historic district.  It is bounded by North St./Arcadia Ave. to the north, Lane Ave. to the south, the Olentangy River to the west, and the railroad tracks east of 4th St. to the east.  Two arches are being erected on High Street, one just south of North St. and one just north of Lane Ave., that will publicly designate the area in a manner that the city hopes will happen like it did in the Short North.  Two major reasons are cited as to why it is so historic.  One is that the district once included a Union camp during the Civil War where soldiers were once settled.  The other is that a mill once graced North St. next to the Olentangy River where the agricultural business surrounding that mill led to the founding of what we know now as "The Ohio State University."  I guess I can see where the city wants to go with this, but I don't really know if it will measure up to the Short North.  Time will tell.

 -  With the 2016 Summer Games going to Rio de Janiero, maybe it's time to get Columbus in contention for the 2020 Summer Olympics.  We have three major arenas, a big stadium that could be converted for Olympic use, a soccer-specific stadium, and folks from all over the world coming here to work and live.  I guess it depends on how much the city might want to fight for this.  It would be a huge boon to Ohio with how the economy has sucked and it might make high-speed rail more certain to be realized.  I think it might be something good and grand to aim for.

 -  Song on repeat: "Run This Town" by Jay-Z, Rihanna, and Kanye West.  A change of pace from the past few songs on repeat, this has truly been listened to a lot by me over the last week or so.  I must admit that there really isn't anything too special about it other that I enjoyed listening to it.

 -  SLP to the following:  Aunt Susie, Rita D., Steve, and my Westerville Browns Backers.

I hope the good stuff keeps coming or keeps up (depending on the stuff), especially after all I've been through in the past year.  I'm more realistically optimistic about things than I have been in a while and it's a good feeling to have.  I've got to go now, but I will be back next week with another set of random thoughts.  Until next time.  Take care and God Bless.
