Random Thoughts #115 - the "October Surprise part deux" edition

Welcome to the latest edition of DJ's Random Thoughts.  As you can see, there is a pic in the upper left hand of this post.  Due to the coding changes at the top of the blog, any link I post doesn't post the logo next to it, so I'm putting a different pic up in the said upper left hand corner on all posts from this point forward.  The pic for this edition is the logo with a lavender ribbon next to it.  The lavender color stands for cancer in general and there are several people I know who have either had to face cancer (including an uncle who passed away this year) or are currently facing it now.  I put the ribbon on there to show my support for those who are facing it now and are fighting to live and thrive.  With that in mind, let's get started.  Enjoy.

 -  The reason for the subtitle "October Surprise part deux" is fourfold.  One, I already used "October Surprise" in a past edition and I didn't want to repeat it here.  Two, the "part deux" part reminds me of the movie "Hot Shots Part Deux" and I like being reminded of and look at things that make me laugh.  Three, as most of you in the U.S. are aware of, this is a presidential election year and, for those who either can't or won't vote early, voting day is a week from now, November 6th.  I would like to remind people who are registered to remember to vote.  Four, aside from election-related stuff, the "October Surprise" is a recurring theme in some of the blurbs in this edition.

 -  There is one October surprise that many people didn't want to have this Halloween and that was a hurricane.  The storm formerly known as Hurricane Sandy (it's not at hurricane status anymore) has been bearing down hard on the U.S. east coast, flooding many areas including New York City and affecting many areas in the East and upper Midwest regions.  The area where I used to live, Columbus, got snow but amazingly Akron only got rain...it has been pretty chilly though.  I've been through windstorms myself (check out the "windstorm of 08" edition in the Past Editions to see that) and have been pretty fortunate to get through those unscathed, but there are many people who haven't been that lucky though.  To those people, I will continue to pray for as they face this and the consequences whatever they are of this so-called "Frankenstorm."

 -  There is something I've been going back and forth on in my head since this storm started making news and for some time before that.  I used to work with the American Red Cross as an AmeriCorps volunteer and worked in disaster relief, even going on a deployment a few months after Hurricane Katrina back in 2005.  It's been a few years but I've been considering getting back into working with the Red Cross as simply a disaster relief volunteer again.  The reason I've been debating it is due to being uncertain as to whether I can or should put forth the time and effort to be a part of something like that again.  There's a lot I want to do and a lot I need to do in my overall life, but I have had the itch to help out in that area again...I'm just not sure with what I have to do elsewhere in my life that I can put in the time commitment for something like this.  If anybody has any input or wisdom they want to share about this, talk about it on the DJRT Facebook, Google Plus, or Twitter pages (JSYK, Twitter might be tricky...you may have to split thoughts into separate tweets there).

 -  The Ohio State Buckeyes pulled off what I think was the comeback of the decade against Purdue about a week and a half ago.  They were down 8 points with a minute left in the game and came back to win it in overtime.  I could only say "wow...just...wow!" to that.  I've seen something close to that only once before but this was the first time as a win for a team I'm a fan of.  Along with a win this past Saturday against Penn State, the Bucks are still undefeated this season (they still don't have a postseason this year though).  However, I do wonder if QB Braxton Miller will make it through the season though.  In half the games, he has had to go out with some kind of injury including a scary-looking one in that Purdue game.  He came back for the Penn State game and didn't have to go out then, but I do wonder if he's gonna make it to the end of this season intact.

 -  The Browns finally won their second game and have won two of the last three.  That is a good step in the right direction but there is a lot to be worked on.  They're taking on the Ravens next week but since that team doesn't have LB Ray Lewis I don't know what to expect.  At least they are starting to win some and that's always good news for Browns fans.

 -  Turning to alternative football for a moment, the UFL suspended their fourth season halfway through.  They are claiming that they will be back to continue it in next spring and then return to their regular fall schedule, but with the issues they've had and all the problems they've brought on themselves, I think it's safe to stick a fork in it and call it done.  I don't think they're coming back and it might be for the best.  They've had a problematic existence with very few teams and playing at the same time as the NFL, colleges, and high schools.  It was pretty easy for them to get lost in the shuffle.  I did follow it for a while and followed the Florida Tuskers, but when they folded that franchise I turned my back on it for several months.  Since that happened I was skeptical of its chances for survival as it seemed they would shoot themselves in the foot on a regular basis.  Now that it's done, I've turned the bulk of my alt-football attention to something I've been keeping tabs on and talking with people about, a new version of the United States Football League.  I started following it after the old owner of the USFL's trademarks sold them to the group currently overseeing it's return back in February.  There is a group that is working to bring a franchise here to the Akron area (I mentioned this before in DJRT).  When I heard about that back in June, my interest in this obviously increased.  It's still a work in progress and it had to push back it's launch date to spring of 2014, but from what I can tell they are working on laying a solid foundation to make sure they don't have the same problems past leagues had that led to their demises.  I'm not getting the same alarming vibes from my gut instincts about the USFL that I got for the XFL and UFL when I started following them.  My instincts on that level are pretty solid and reliable so I have a good feeling about this league and it's chances.  As things shake out, I will likely talk about the league in future editions of DJRT.

 -  Query:  What do you take for granted?  This is a question that pops into my head from time to time.  To be honest, I don't know what I do take for granted but I don't believe it's as much as people believe I do.  I think most people say and believe they don't do too much of that either, but it's a question worth thinking about.  What do you take for granted?

 -  I didn't actually watch any of the presidential debates, but I did follow Twitter while they were on.  That was an interesting experience, especially reading stuff from comedian Chris Rock...he had me laughing out loud at several things.  Anyway, I can sum up the debate with one simple phrase:  "Big Bird, binders, and bayonets, oh my!"

 -  Freebie Alert:  On Veterans Day weekend, neither the Browns nor the Buckeyes play that weekend, which I think is the first time I can think of actually happening during the fall.  If anybody is looking for something to do, the U.S. National Park system is letting people into its parks for free on November 10, 11, and 12.  Normally many of these parks charge an entrance fee to enter, but this Veterans Day weekend you can go check out a national park for free.  It might make for a good family outing if it's not too cold where you're going...or even if it is if you're brave enough.  You can find out more here:  U.S. National Park Service - Free Entrance Days.

 -  Song on Repeat:  "Marry Me" by Train.  If I ever find the woman I want to spend the rest of my life with, I would definitely use this song either as part of the proposal or somehow put it in the wedding if it were agreed upon to use then.  I could use it as the actual proposal itself...I don't know.  I guess I'd have to find a way to make that work somehow.  In any case, when I start going forward again in that area of my life (relationships and stuff), that will be something I keep in mind in the event I'm thinking about marriage.

 -  Shoutouts:  Bob, Holly, Cory, Tom R., Lynn, Jenny, Katie, Kristin, Karen S., Cheryl, and Ernest W.

That's it for this edition.  November this year is going to be an interesting month with an election, an MCW show, Thanksgiving, my dad's birthday...a lot of things going on that I'll likely talk about in the next edition.  Until next time, folks.  Take care and God Bless.

Random Thoughts #114 - the "breakup" edition

Hello and welcome to another set of Random Thoughts from yours truly.  I've got some stuff I planned beforehand to include in this particular edition but there will be some stuff that will come off the top of my head today.  With that in mind, let's get to it.

 -  The last time I alluded to being single at some point, I got into some trouble with several people.  Well, I'm going to talk about it again but I don't think I'll have too many issues with it this time out...I hope.  I have been single for 5 years now, which has been a pretty long time.  There are times where it has been a blessing and where it hasn't been.  In any case, I wanted to make a note of this here because there were things that changed for me as a result of the breakup with my ex Jennifer, thus the reason for the subtitle of this edition.  Now, I'm not going to talk about specifics from the relationship itself other then I tried on my end to make it work but I will say it didn't end well.  It ended when I accidentally insulted her (I'm not going to say how) and she decided to dump me.  I didn't mean to, but it happened and I'm not going to avoid my culpability here (BTW, in the event that she ends up reading this, I want to apologize because she didn't deserve that).  I haven't seen anything online from her whatsoever or heard a peep from her since that night, so I guess that's a sign that things weren't going to work out anyway.  On the night of the breakup, I decided to head up to an old haunt, the Outside Corner, and try to get my mind off of things.  I was still upset about what happened when a friend of mine who was the deejay there, DJ Legend, said something to me that got me to thinking.  I mentioned to him that I was trying to make things work with her and he asked something along the lines of "why didn't you just let it work instead of trying to make it work?"  He caught me off guard with that and I had to think about that for a while.  I have to admit that the relationship wasn't as easy as I had wanted it to be, but I may have complicated things with concentrating on making sure things worked out instead of concentrating on keeping the relationship going and letting it just "happen", for lack of a better word.  I wanted it to work out badly but given what transpired during the relationship and how I was going about things on my end it didn't take me long to realize that it wasn't meant to be.  I actually got over her rather quickly partly from realizing that...that may sound disingenuous but that is what happened.  The next time I have a girlfriend and I'm serious with her, I will definitely keep what DJ Legend said in mind and I thank him for that because I definitely needed it.

 -  The breakup actually jumpstarted a few things for me in my life that impact me to this day.  I would say not maybe a week or two after the breakup I went to my first Browns Backers meetup because a particular Browns game was blacked out in Columbus and, being the serious Browns fan I am, I didn't want to miss it.  It never occurred to me to watch the game with fellow fans or join a fan group but since that game, I have officially been a Browns Backer ever since...and I keep my Browns Backer card with me to prove it!  Also, I started what I consider my "last hurrah" as a clubgoer for the next two and a half years by regularly hitting up places like the Outside Corner, Club Polaris, Screaming Willies and Martini Park.  Until June of 2010, I would head up to one of those clubs on any given weekend, most likely a Saturday, and try to dance my butt off when I was up to it (BTW, I haven't been to a nightclub since June 2011, which was about a year & a half ago...it seems weird to realize it's been that long).  A few months after the breakup, I started helping out my friend Cory with his church and got myself more in tune with Jesus...that's always a good thing.  All three of those things led me to make a lot of friends and reconnected with several I hadn't seen in ages that I still keep up with.  However, the most important thing that probably happened to me was that I got motivated to start expressing my opinion again and not wanting to hold back with what I truly felt about things and people and events when I did.  I started up a personal blog on Myspace that eventually led up to what you're reading here today.  I would have to say that it if it weren't for that breakup, DJ's Random Thoughts would probably not exist.  Sometimes a breakup can lead to misfortune and chronic loneliness...and I have had some since my last one...but in this case I found that it also led to several blessings in my life that, quite frankly, I cannot do without.

 -  Speaking of the Browns, my protest has finally ended because the Browns finally ended their losing streak by beating their division rivals, the Cincinnati Bengals.  That means I will be wearing Browns stuff again and I couldn't be happier.  It also happened to be the last game that Randy Lerner served as the owner of the team because of the events in the next blurb...

 -  Today is literally a new day and a new dawn for the Cleveland Browns.  This is the first time in decades that either a Modell or a Lerner has not been the primary owner of the team.  Jimmy Haslem has officially become the new owner of the Browns and was approved unanimously by his now-fellow NFL owners.  Change has already started under Haslem's ownership, starting with Mike Holmgren stepping down as president of the team after the season is over and Joe Banner, ex-Eagles exec, taking over as CEO.  These changes were expected but I have to say, like with Mangini, I believe Holmgren leaves this team better off than when he started with the Browns.  The next step...regularly returning the Browns to the playoffs.

 -  It's been pretty quiet for me on a personal front, but I did finally sell my old car.  It wasn't working for me so I sold it.  When I get the money I hope to get a newer car.  There's a lot of stuff that has to happen for me first but that is my hope.

 -  The OSU Buckeyes are still undefeated.  However, I think in that last game the refs tried to give the win to the Indiana Hoosiers.  The Bucks still pulled a win out despite the officials.  Even though there is no postseason for Ohio State, it might be something to keep an eye out for the rest of this season though.

 -  Query:  Has there ever been a time where how you saw things or how you felt about things did NOT match up with the reality of something that was going on?  An odd question to ask, but it's one I ask of myself especially in regards to politics, so I thought I'd throw it out there for everybody else to think about.

 -  MCW Riot Television is finally airing on cable TV.  The first episode aired about a couple weeks ago and new episodes will continue airing on local cable systems on Wednesday nights.  Like I said before, episodes will be available online sometime after their original airings (at this time, I'm not sure exactly when but they will be up)...I have to catch the show that way because it's not on my cable system yet and even if it was I don't have access to it where I watch my shows anyway, but I can always catch up.  I want to share with you today the first episode of Riot Television that aired on cable a couple weeks ago:

 -  A few days ago I happened to be driving past the house where I lived when I was a baby and found out it was for sale.  I don't have the money to have a place of my own right now, but it was of interest to me considering that the first two memories I have of my life came from when I lived there and thought it was worth noting.

 -  It is Halloween season so....BOO!!!!!

 -  I got to go to the first preseason Cleveland Cavaliers game with my friend Bob and his family.  They took on an international team, Montepaschi Siena.  I had never been to Quicken Loans Arena before, so I was happy to finally get a chance to head up to the Q.  We had nosebleed seats but they were great seats to watch the game from either on the court or on the huges screens about the court.  The Cavs won the game and looked decent but there were definitely areas for them to improve.  I don't know how much I'm going to keep up with the Cavs this season, but at least I got to go to a game with one of my best friends.

Song on Repeat:  "Smile" by Cheap Trick.  This song was released a couple of years ago and was featured in the One Tree Hill episode "Don't You Forget About Me" dedicated to famed movie director John Hughes.  It is just a beautiful ballad to listen to.

 -  Shoutouts:  Holly, Bob, Zach, Bill D., Tom R., Ernest, Todd, Griff, Joe C., Maggie, Tammy, & Andrea

That's it for this edition.  If I don't get a chance to, I want to wish everybody a happy Halloween and hope that people stay safe if they participate in related holiday activities.  Until next time, folks.  Take care and God Bless.

Random Thoughts #113 - the "query" edition

Greetings and welcome to the latest edition of DJ's Random Thoughts.  This particular one won't have as many subjects as others have been but I do have stuff I want to post.  With that in mind, let's get to it.

 -  It's hard to believe that I've been in northeast Ohio for one full year already.  Time has flown by.  It's also been about 10 months since I returned to blogging and a lot has happened here with DJRT in that short time.  Something I had intended to start doing when I came back last December was to occasionally pose general questions in various editions to generate discussions and sometimes get feedback on what a lot of you were thinking.  Since I came back, I haven't really done that.  I intended to, but I just never did it.  That changes today with some slight alterations using a new staple for DJRT that I am simply calling Query (which is also the reason for this edition's subtitle).  For those of you who don't know what a query is, it is basically another term for the word "question" but by my standards in a more fancy way.  This new Query staple will simply be a serious-minded, maybe-critical question that I ask (no humorous stuff intended).  Sometimes I'll add background info for it or what led me to ask it and sometimes I will post the question by itself just to put it out there.  The ultimate intention for this staple is to get people to seriously think about whatever question I pose.  With that in mind, I do hope that it does stimulate some discussion through comments here and on the DJRT Facebook, Google Plus and Twitter pages, but I won't actively be seeking that especially since some questions may trigger different sensitivities in various folks.  If you decide to comment, cool...if not, that's alright too...but I do hope that it leads to some thought-provoking introspection and gets readers to think about things in ways they may not have before.

 -  Query:  How has politics changed you?  There is a presidential election coming up here in the United States and the campaigning and election ads are now out in full force.  From the youngest child to the oldest person...and even before and after life...politics affects us in ways that we easily see and just as easily don't.  I'm not just talking about governmental politics.  It could be workplace politics, club politics, religious politics, group or interpersonal politics...more than just the type of politics we see playing out in mass media today.  As much as I want to believe otherwise, once you're touched by politics you are changed somehow.  It may be blatantly obvious or extremely subtle, but change happens once you are touched.  Now before I go on, I want to make clear that I am absolutely NOT interested in people's personal political philosophies or where people stand on individual candidates or issues here.  In other words, I'm not asking about what you believe in.  I'm asking about how you're affected by something...in this case, politics.  I've seen an awful lot of people be affected and do things both good and bad once they're touched by politics.  The most prominent observation I've personally made is how oblivious people can be to how much slander, libel and spin they put out themselves in describing important issues and anybody who doesn't exactly...and I mean exactly...mesh with their own political philosophies.  It's a staggering amount of people, including some good people I personally know and many I don't.  Such slander, libel and spin are sometimes so intertwined with particular political philosophies that it comes off to them as absolutely true despite whatever reality shows.  Any mere mention of a specific political subject, much less a disagreement of some sort, will set them off, sometimes in extreme fashion.  If you want to talk about landmines, politics is a big one for many.  I've seen people I would previously think were cool come off as complete crackpots based on whatever politics might be going on at a particular juncture.  On the flip side, I have seen politics change ordinary people into extraordinary people, sometimes through simple shared ideals and sometimes through awe-striking wisdom that penetrates even the densest of crusty curmudgeons.  I've personally witnessed some of the laziest people I've ever known transform into the most dynamic of individuals that people just can't get enough of.  Before I go on too long about this, let me get back to the original query here...and remember, this is not about what philosophies you have.  I know it's probably not as easy a question to answer as you might want it to be, but I'm putting it out there:  how have you been changed by politics?

 -  As I mentioned earlier, there is a presidential election coming up soon.  If you aren't registered and you are eligible to vote, go get yourself registered if you are still able to.  If you are registered, don't forget to vote if you haven't already (early voting is already going on in some places).

 -  I just noticed I've already used a lot of big words today.  I guess that's what you get when you play lots of Words with Friends.

 -  The Cleveland Browns have lost ten straight regular season games dating back to last year.  Yes, they have been improving and there are some bright spots here and there, but as a Browns fan and Browns Backer this consistent losing is unacceptable to me.  Therefore, I'm going to do something in protest of all this losing.  I will not be wearing any Browns gear again until they win their next game.  I am definitely NOT jumping ship like some people might be wishing for (like some Steelers fans and anti-Browns people) but I'm sick and tired of this losing streak they've been on.  It's just embarassing.  Don't get me wrong...I still support the Browns and will continue to cheer them on, but until this losing streak is over, I won't wear a single stitch of Browns clothing...no shirts, no hats, no fall or winter weather gear, nothing.  Let me make clear that I am not trying to start some kind of mass protest here like that stupid stunt of a protest that Dawg Pound Mike guy pathetically tried to pull a few years back.  If any other Browns fans want to protest this way, that's fine, but this is simply my own way of registering displeasure with the current state of affairs regarding their record.  C'mon, Browns...win a game, why don't cha?

 -  Staying with football for a moment, I have beared witness to some of the most amazing catches in college football this season on TV that I have ever seen.  In most years I'd be lucky to see one or two over an entire season.  This season, I've already seen four such catches in the five weeks college football has been on TV live including that absolutely amazing one for a touchdown by Ohio State's Devin Smith in OSU's first game this season.  It's already made college football pretty interesting to watch this year and I don't have any idea what will be coming in the rest of it.

 -  Tomorrow night, MCW premieres Riot Television on various cable systems in the NE Ohio area.  It will regularly air on Wednesdays at 10 PM and you will have to search out which channels it will be one (a list of them is available on MCW Riot Television's Facebook page).  If you can't catch it or it's not available on your particular cable system just yet, it will be available to watch sometime after airing on television at MCWPro.com...not sure when but it will be on there.  Check it out when you get the chance.

 -  Song on Repeat:  "Fu-Gee-La" by The Fugees.  Whenever I hear this song, it reminds me of my old friend Roger Byrd who passed away a few years back.  When the Fugees released their album "The Score" which this song is included on, he used to constantly talk about them and talk about picking up their album.  So one day when I was in a record store, I got it on CD and at the same time picked one up for him on cassette to play in his car...that should tell you how long ago this happened, that I had to get it for a cassette player.  I remember the night I gave him that tape...we were about to head up to a club and we had to stop by one of the residential towers at OSU (don't remember which tower, Morrill or Lincoln, off hand) to pick up our friend Dave.  As I was getting out, I pulled the tape out of my jacket pocket and handed it to him and said this was for him.  You'd think he'd won the lottery with the reaction he gave me to the gift I just gave him.  He popped that cassette into his car player and pumped up the volume on that sucker so high that I could hear it from a long way away.  When we got back to the car, he was jamming hard to one of the songs on there.  Every time I hear Fu-Gee-La, I think of him.  Rest in peace, old friend.

 -  Shoutouts:  Holly, Todd, Ron, Dave, Matt E., Justin Mane, Ernest, Tom R., Cory, Mike L., Ron, and Jay.

That's it for this edition.  Before I go here, I want to pass on condolences to my brother-in-law for his loss.  Also, I added a car magnet to the DJRT Store for those of you who prefer those to bumper stickers.  I hope the query I posted today gets you to thinking about some things.  Until next time folks.  Take care and God Bless.
