Random Thoughts #125 - the "festival" edition

Hello and welcome to another edition of DJ's Random Thoughts.  I've had a few more things going on than usual so I thought it was time to do another one.  With that in mind, enjoy.

 -  It's hard to believe I've actually done 125 editions of DJ's Random Thoughts.  It's a milestone for me in that it has surpassed the two stints combined at Ohio State to become the longest single commitment of my life so far.  That's a feat in itself.  The journey started as an old personal Myspace blog that moved over to Blogspot 4 years ago around this time.  Actually, the DJ's Random Thoughts name first started on June 15, 2009.  After a dispute with several people over something I wrote in that old blog (something I've talked at length here about before but not the main point of what I'm talking about today), with the question of whether I was even going to stay on Myspace over my head (I did end that Myspace account a few months later) and a small desire at the time to make my thoughts more "public," if you will, I decided to take a chance and start one on Blogger.  I couldn't even imagine then what it would become for me over the years and how it's changed.  In the future I expect it to change even more.  I'll be honest...I don't know how many of you got something from DJRT but I sure have gotten a lot from doing it.  Thank you for reading and supporting DJRT and I hope it continues to be a ride worth sticking with me on.

 -  Before I move on, I also have to recognize that I've been using the DJRT Logo for almost one year now officially.  I've changed the official color scheme a couple of times but the design is still the same.  Like I was when I initially created it, I couldn't be more proud of having it.

 -  Officially, summer will start in a few more days but unofficially the summer season arrived late last month starting around Memorial Day.  That means it's the season for fairs and celebrations and weddings and and carnivals and festivals, hence the edition subtitle.  In my ongoing effort to get myself more out and about in the world, I've been making a concerted effort to start hitting up more of these festivals wherever they are taking place.  As I've already talked about, I've been going to the Rockin' on the River festivals in Cuyahoga Falls.  Last weekend I hit it up a little later than I usually do and I actually had to look around for an open parking spot (I think people know I like to get to things real early...I don't want to miss anything...at least that's my excuse...).  I love walking around that festival and around downtown Cuyahoga Falls in general.  About a week and a half ago, I made a day of festival-going to hit up three separate festivals including one I discovered by accident simply driving by it.  I first hit up the Porch Rokr festival at Highland Square in Akron.  I came across a bunch of people doing a group Zumba dancing lesson/demonstration on one of the front yards.  I also came across some people selling jello shots just right in their front yard...I don't think that's exactly legal so that's why it was notable to me.  Most of the houses in the 10 block radius that encompassed the festival either had a band or artist performing in someone's front yard or on their porch, a yard sale going on, or one of the types of vendors you might find at most festivals.  Although I was going to avoid it, I changed my mind and decided to hit up the Riverfront Irish Festival in Cuyahoga Falls.  I was just going to simply pass by it but I found a good parking spot really quick so I decided to stop.  The one big thing I noticed about the Irish fest was that there were a lot of people in kilts.  It was a bigger festival than most in the Falls in that it used up most of the space in Falls River Square on both sides of Portage Trail (anyone who's been there knows what I'm talking about).  After that, I ended up driving by the Chapel Hill Mall area and I come across a carnival taking place behind Macy's.  I haven't been to a carnival or a theme park in over a decade so I thought I'd stop and at least check out the midway.  I didn't ride any rides, which is something that is going to have to change sooner than later, but it was fun just to watch everything going on there and I did take a photo which I'm using as this edition's main pic up top.  I think I've already hit up more festivals this year than in the past decade combined with more to come...

 -  Speaking of "more to come," there's even more festivals coming up that I am planning on hitting up.  With the Fourth of July coming up, there's obviously going to be a lot of events going on around that time.  Two I'm planning on hitting up are the fireworks in downtown Akron on the 4th itself as part of the annual Rib, White & Blue festival there (here's the Rib, White & Blue website) and the Rock the Docks festival in Springfield Township (here's the Rock the Docks Facebook page; fireworks are on July 6th at dusk).  One I'm hoping to hit up at the end of August is the Art in the Square festival at Highland Square in Akron (here the Art in the Square website).  It skipped last year but is returning this year and looks to be another exciting one.  I'm also hoping to hit up other celebrations and fairs as well so on the remote chance anybody wants to come along with me to one, hit me up.

 -  Rocky's, a roller rink I used to skate around at as a pre-teen, might be getting torn down if a senior housing project being planned comes to fruition.  They wouldn't tear down the entire building...just the big section that houses the roller rink itself.  Before I got into dancing, I would go there a lot when I was a kid.  At first, I just hung out there in the arcade at the front of the joint and didn't do any skating because, quite frankly, I was afraid to.  Once I got past that and actually learned how to skate, I really enjoyed myself.  I had a lot of trips and falls in the process of learning, but that's life itself.  This was an era very much prior to the introduction of inline skates.  Since that time, the only time I went skating was about three years ago in Columbus...or at least tried to.  Let's just say I was out of practice and leave it at that.

 -  Quick question:  if Bill Belichick starts Tebowing, does that mean the end of the world is nigh?

 -  In my recent internet travels, I came across something rather amusing that I thought should be shared here...(fake) upcoming versions of Windows.  Here's what I found (as I'm saying this sarcastically):
  • Windows 9: Just like Windows 8, instead of the icons being boxes, they're stars.
  • Windows 10: All icons now come in sexy zebra stripe.
  • Windows 11: A Windows 95 Throwback.
  • Windows 12: A Windows 11 Throwback.
  • Windows 13: Skipped to avoid bad luck.
  • Windows 14: Requires only a few minor abacus calculations.
  • Windows 15: Operating system with human brain.
  • Windows 16: Operating system with dog brain.
  • Windows 17: Edible.
  • Windows 18: Rumored to be used in remote mountain communities!
  • Windows 19: In this exciting Operating System, your cursor is wrongly accused of murder and you must click the octagon shaped icons to escape from authorities and prove your innocence.
  • Windows 20: A Windows 12 Throwback.
 -  Song on Repeat:  "Against All Odds" by Phil Collins.  This is a song that I like that for some reason I feel it should fit somewhere in my life but I can't seem to figure out exactly where.  I'll probably figure that out when I least expect it.  Oh well.

 -  Shoutouts:  Debbie, Todd, Terry B., Holly, Ernest, Kristin, Aunt Sue, Bob, Scotty & George.

That's it for this edition.  Join me next time at I attempt to dunk all my haters and antagonists in a dunk tank at a fair...as soon as I figure out how to pack them all into one like a clown car.  Then again, maybe I shouldn't waste a dunk tank on people who just aren't worth it.  Until next time, folks.  Take care and God Bless.

Random Thoughts #124 - the "faded" edition

Hello and welcome to another round of Random Thoughts.  It's been a while since I did the last one and thought it was time to do another.  With that in mind, enjoy.

 -  As many of you already know, I still continue to face that crossroads I've been dealing with for a while now.  This past month has been particularly rough for me as my head and my mood have been all over the place, trending low or downward for the most part.  It's just been hard to keep my spirits up, which is not really news except it's been dulling my enjoyment in things I like including the warmer weather I've been looking forward to for so long and even some of my walks.  It's been difficult to deal with especially when actively trying to do anything about it only makes things worse.  I hate that it happens this way for me.  In other instances when this has happened, the only thing I could really do about it is ride it out and that was it.  That looks like what I'm gonna have to do here too.  I'm just not sure at this point where that ride is going to let me off this time.  I just hope it's not worse off than where I have been previously.

 -  As you can see by the edition pic and by poking around DJRT a bit, I've made some changes to the DJRT logo.  I decided to change up the look of it by flip-flopping the colors and giving it a more worn "faded" look, hence the reason for this edition's subtitle.  It's been almost a year since I introduced this design last July and thought it was time to freshen it up a bit.  I've already changed the social media pages pics and have introduced new official standard shirts in the DJRT Store to reflect the change.  I believe the changes I've made will make the clothing bearing the logo look cooler, but how people see it isn't my call.  Check out the new shirts here and buy them if you haven't already:  the Official T-Shirt for Guys & the Official T-Shirt for Ladies.

 -  I had something else I was thinking about talking about in this edition but I'm going to hold off for a while on that if I decide to do it at all.  It is some things that I've been seeing trend-wise and what might be occurring as a result that has me concerned about several friends of mine.  I'm holding off on talking about it now for two reasons.  One, my recent state of mind that I described earlier in this edition might cause what I wanted to talk about to come off differently than how I intend it to and I would rather come at it with a fresher state of mind.  Two, the subject matter I'm wanting to bring up is very touchy for some people I know so I want to take more time in making sure I'm accurately seeing what I believe I'm seeing in some of these folks before I get into it here on DJRT.  I do want to put up an article I found which I recently posted on my personal Facebook timeline that has a small relation to what I'm going on about here that might be worth perusing, especially by some of my female friends:  Date a Boy Who Travels - Huffington Post.

 -  Can you believe it's been two years since I've been inside of a dance club and actually dancing?  I can't either...

 -  Peaceful Journey:  my aunt Marie died a few days ago...don't know exactly when but it was apparently sometime this past weekend.  Since she became a part of my father's side of the family only several years ago, I only met her twice and I didn't know her all that well.  However, I wanted to note it because it is the 3rd aunt of mine that has passed away in the last year alone (that makes two aunts and one great-aunt).  I hate when this stuff happens to my family and I want to pass on my condolences to my uncle Gary for his loss.  R.I.P. Aunt Marie.

 -  This Saturday, June the 8th, there will be a very unique festival coming to the Highland Square area of Akron for the first time.  It is called the Porch Rokr Festival (no, that is not misspelled) and it will take place from noon to 8 PM.  The main crux of this festival is that there will be 80 bands performing on the porches of 50 different houses throughout a 10 block area of Highland Square (the festival area is situated in an area bordered by W. Market St., Portage Path, Memorial Parkway & Merriman Rd).  Aside from the music, there will be food, art and yard sales throughout that area as well.  If you plan to check it out, I suggest you take your walking shoes because you will likely be walking around a lot while you're there.  You can find out more about this Saturday's festivities and who's performing at their official web site here:  Porch Rokr at Highland Square.

 -  Speaking of walking, I have been trying to get out more since the weather has improved.  Usually I like to walk about downtown Cuyahoga Falls but I do go other places sometimes.  I went walking around during the first couple of Rockin' on the River events in Cuyahoga Falls.  The first concert was really cold which threw me off as I may have underdressed and caught a short-term cold (I'm over that).  Last weekend I went walking at the event at the temperature was perfect, with a slight wind that made the temps that much more comfortable.  Of course my walkaround got cut off by an approaching thunderstorm but I enjoyed it nonetheless.  I'm hoping that I do more of those kinds of walks this summer though I'm avoiding downtown Cuyahoga Falls this weekend because the Irish Festival will be taking place and I can tell you from my own experiences that it's hell trying to find a place to park during that festival.

 -  According to a "heavy metal band generator" I tried out, the name of the imaginary group I would front would be called "Iron Death".  Take that for what you will...

 -  On the Ohio State front, it looks like E. Gordon Gee, the long time president of the university currently on his second go-round at OSU, will be retiring at the end of the month.  He's been roundly criticized for comments he recently made about Catholics and college athletic's Southeastern Conference which may have prompted his retirement.  He was there my first go-round at Ohio State in the early 90's and he was extremely personable and friendly.  He went out of his way to connect with the student body on campus, going to pizza parties in dorms and just hanging out with students at events or wherever he was.  I encountered him several times during that first go-round.  I remember one time when I was waiting to get a pizza at the old Ohio Union (many of you who went to the old building should remember how much of a warehouse it looked like at the time)...someone said "Hi, DJ" from behind me and I turned around to find that President Gee was the one who said it.  At a 50,000 student campus, for a president of the university to know my name without prompting was cool as heck.  He was a big time fundraiser for OSU as well.  I'm telling you, that man will be greatly missed once he's retired.  I just hope he still plans to stick around and do things with the university because he was just that great for the school.

 -  Song on Repeat:  "Amie" by Pure Prairie League.  Have you ever heard an old song on the radio and thought "Hey!  I know that song!" but couldn't remember or didn't know who sang it or even the name of the song?  For the longest time this was one of those songs for me.  It came out 40 years ago from a band originally from Waverly, Ohio and is a comforting bluegrass melody.

 -  Shoutouts:  Debbie, Aunt Sue, Ernest, Bob, Lynn, Kristin, Holly, Jill, Paula, Maggie, Tom R., Todd, Laura, Anna, Jenny K., Cheryl, Katie, Dave & Ron.

That's it for this edition.  I've got a lot of "processing" I have to do, for lack of a better term, and I hope to get through my funk sooner than later.  Like I said, all I can do is ride it out.  Until next time folks.  Take care and God Bless.
