Random Thoughts #81 - the "walking" edition

Greetings and welcome to another edition of Random Thoughts from yours truly.  You know what?  Unless there's a glitch in the web site counter I have for my blogs, I don't think anyone actually read the last entry I put up...and after all the sprucing up I did.  Regardless, I'll keep doing it whether there isn't a single reader or there's a lot of them because that's how I roll.  I like to write so I keep doing it and keep on going.  (EDIT:  I figured out what happened and am in the process of fixing it...my apologies to those of you who did read the last blog...my bad - DJ)  With that in mind, let's gets started.  Enjoy.

 -  The reason for the subtitle this week, "walking," is that I've been doing a lot of it over the past couple of weeks.  My car is working even though it isn't in the greatest condition (and hasn't been really since I've had it).  It's just that there's been some really good weather recently and I wanted to get out of the apartment but just didn't feel like driving that much.  So, I started walking to some places.  I did have to walk to the bus for something about a week ago (I'll get to that in the next blurb), but other than that I walked around the neighborhood and elsewhere, probably about 10 miles worth of walking, just for the heck of it.  I'm probably gonna do more of it because I'm finding I enjoy it...as long as the weather cooperates.

 -  A week ago Friday, I went to my first Total Non-Stop Action (TNA) Wrestling event down at the Ice Haus next to Nationwide Arena.  It was a house show (meaning it wasn't a televised event) and I took the bus to get there because I didn't want to park my car downtown (I hate parking down there on weekends and I especially hate having to pay so much just to do so).  I took some notes from my time at the event which I'm going to share here, in bold and not necessarily in chronological order:
  • I arrived at the arena around 5 PM, but had to wait until 6:30 to get into the building.  I talked with a lot of fans outside the arena while I waited.  Don West came out to hard sell some picture books for talent to autograph for $20.  Boy, that's expensive.
  • Before the show, I got to take a picture with TNA referee Earl Hebner.  For those of you who don't know, he was involved in the Montreal Screw-Job for WWE back in 1997 (look it up on Google for more details).  It became a minor point of interest during the show.
  • From my seat I was able to get some pictures of the entranceway for the wrestlers to the ring as well as the ring itself.
  • I don't think there's a bad spot anywhere in the Ice Haus to watch the action from.  Guess I got lucky there as well as a lot of other people.
  • It was almost a full house there, with some seats empty behind me, but for the most part the house was PACKED.  That's pretty impressive for just a house show.
  • TNA Knockouts Velvet Sky, Taylor Wilde, and Sarita are absolutely GORGEOUS in person and look much better live than how they come off on television.
  • One of the matches was an 4-way X Division matchup between Homicide, Jay Lethal, Shannon Moore, and Douglas Williams.  Jay Lethal was doing a lot of Ric Flair impersonations during the match which were absolutely hilarious.
  •  I'm noticing that the wrestling action and the moves in particular seem more crisp than on TV.  I would have thought that the opposite would have held true.  I guess times are a-changin'.
  • TNA main-eventer AJ Styles seems to be watching the early matches from the balcony area with a small child.  I think it was his son.  They both seemed to be getting into the show.  Styles seemed really into the matches from what I could tell.  He must really be a great dad to want to share his passion for pro wrestling with his son.
  • Abyss is now in full heel mode, teaming with Matt Morgan and Eric Young against Jeff Jarrett, Mr. Anderson (formerly Mr. Kennedy in WWE), and Kurt Angle in a 6-man tag team match.  Kurt Angle is REALLY over here (meaning he's getting a ton of cheers coming his way)...I guess people in Columbus just love the guy.
  • After the 6-man tag match, Jeff Jarrett, a wrestler and also the founder of TNA Wrestling, announced to the fans that today (June 18, 2010) is the exact 8th year anniversary of TNA's founding.  Now, that's pretty cool that I got to go on the company's actual anniversary even though it's normally done at the Slammiversary pay-per-views every year.
  • Throughout the show and before and after, Don West has really been hard selling the merchandise, especially during intermission.
  • There were two official autograph sessions for fans before and during the show.  The one to get Jeff Jarrett's autograph before the show was LONG, but the one for the Beautiful People (Velvet Sky and Madison Rayne) at intermission was LONGER.  TNA is more popular here than I imagined.
  • For the record, Rob Terry is a HUGE man.
  • The main event was AJ Styles vs. Jeff Hardy.  Jay Lethal, Mr. Anderson, Rob Terry and Douglas Williams came out to watch the match in the balcony with AJ's son.  Jeff Hardy was also really over with the crowd and had a MONSTER pop.  They tore it up during their match with a lot of high flying action and a lot of ring psychology being used.  It was an awesome match.
  • After the show, I was able to get my picture taken with Orlando Jordan, Sarita, and Douglas Williams.  Williams and Jordan in particular were really cool to talk to.  They had a $20-a-pop picture session with Jeff Hardy in the ring but I skipped out on that.
  • Jeremy Borash, the ring announcer, suggested that a pay-per-view event for TNA might be in the future for Columbus in the next year or so.
I was extremely happy that I was able to get a ticket for this event and I loved almost every minute of it.  It was the first time in a long time that I felt like myself at 100%.  Don't get me wrong...I've had some excellent times and events and stuff, even as recently as a month ago.  However, this was the first time in Lord knows how long that it seemed like everything was firing on all cylinders for me, everything was going great, and I felt absolutely awesome.  I can safely say that this is something that hasn't happened in years for me, but it happened that Friday night.  I definitely want to feel that way again and on a more regular basis.  Back to the show, it was electric.  TNA didn't have to go all out and put out such an effort for a house show, but they did and I for one am glad they did.  The talent and the crew all looked like they wanted to be there (with the exception of Jeremy Borash, who seemed to book it out of there as soon as the show was over, but that's just my POV).  I had more fun within 5 minutes of getting there than I did for the entirety of the WWE Raw show experience I had back in January.  If TNA comes to your town, wherever you are, go to the show...I believe it will be worth your time and your money.  They have a long way to go to match up to WWE, but if they keep up the effort they put into this one house show for all of their shows, they might have a decent shot.  BTW, I've got some pics up from the event on my Facebook page if you want to check those out.

 -  The days after the show were rather interesting for me, physically-speaking.  I yelled so much at the TNA show that I had lost my voice at times for several days afterward.  Mostly it was scratchy but I had to stop talking to rest my vocal cords.  It feels like in the past couple of days my voice seems back to normal but keeping quiet was a chore at times.  On top of that, I tried to use a Breathe Right strip for the first time last week.  I got a sample in the mail so I tried it.  Within an hour of putting it on, my nose started running and my right eye got extremely itchy and red.  Now either my sinuses started to drain because of the Breathe Right strips or I'm allergic to said strips.  I'm guessing the former, but either way I'm not sure I'm gonna be using Breathe Right in the future.

 -  I did catch the WWE's PPV last Sunday, Fatal 4-Way.  There were a lot of surprises and title changes and they furthered the NXT Season 1 program they've been doing over the past couple of weeks.  However, I felt sorta blah about the show itself.  It may be due to the experience I had at the TNA show or that WWE relies too much on their informercial-like programming, but if WWE keeps going on automatic like they have been, TNA may catch them sooner rather than later.

 -  I also caught bits of two award shows last night, the Daytime Emmys and the BET Awards.  The Emmys were a vast improvement over last year's broadcast, but the BETs just blew it away.  The one thing I can take from the award shows this weekend is that it seems like Chris Brown looks like he's finally getting to where he needs to be.  He had a blowaway performance at the BETs in honoring Michael Jackson that will probably be talked about for a long time to come.  He really, REALLY screwed up doing what he did to Rihanna last year and what he did should never have happened, period.  As horrendous as it was, it does seem like it's time to move on from it and go forward because life goes on.  Personally I don't know if I can ever look at him or his music in the same way after what went down last year, but he is too talented to not be appreciated for what good music he has done so far.  I just hope he keeps up on doing the right thing from now on.

 -  As a rule I don't regularly push or sell people on any service or product in my blogs, but I'm making an exception here today.  A few weeks ago I discovered this website called Swagbucks.  It is a site where people can earn "Swagbucks" toward prizes and stuff just by searching the Internet through their site, taking daily polls, shopping major websites through them, and taking random surveys.  This is a completely legitimate site and people have earned Swagbucks for things ranging from posters to gift cards (Paypal, iTunes, Amazon, Macy's, etc.) to Nintendo Wii's, 80 Gig PS3's and 32-inch LCD televisions.  They're partnered with other websites (WWE and TNA come to mind) with prizes you can obtain through using Swagbucks earned on their sites for some of their specific products.  I've been on there regularly and I hope to earn some swag, so to speak, through this site.  If you're interested in learning more about it or maybe signing up for it, I have placed a link in the column to the right underneath the links to my hangouts so that you can check it out for yourself.  I do want to state now that it might take a long time to get some of the high-end prizes, but I believe the effort might be worth it.  Oh, BTW, it is free.

 -  I found a couple other interesting things during my recent web surfing (don't worry, I'm not selling anything here).  The first is a site called Uncyclopedia, which is like Wikipedia if it were done by comedians and sarcastic people.  Type in "Ohio" in the search box and look at what it says about Ohio...it's rather humorous and interesting, to say the least.  The other is something I found on the Huffington Post written by Paulina Porizkova regarding her viewpoints on the subject of fame.  It's an interesting read on the nature of celebrity according to someone who's been there and done that.

 -  Before I wind this down, I want to talk about the upcoming holiday, the Independence Day/July 4th weekend.  I'm sure most of you already have some kind of plans set for this next weekend.  In Columbus, Red, White, and BOOM! takes place on Friday, July 2nd and there will be fireworks (the biggest in the Midwest, they claim) around 10 PM.  Last year I went there by myself and I left before the fireworks started.  This year I want to watch the fireworks.  For those of you who don't have any solid plans I invite you to join me this year.  Seeing as how parking downtown is going to be an enormous pain in the butt, I think taking the bus downtown and back to watch the fireworks would be the best idea.  I'm getting on the bus in front of Emporium Square on the Cleveland Ave. side (Emporium Square is at the corner of Cleveland Ave and Dublin-Granville Rd/Rt. 161 on the northeast side of Columbus).  If anybody wants to join me, you can park at Emporium Square and join me on the #1 Cleveland Ave. bus going downtown and back.  Bus trips are $1.75 each way, but it'll be easier to get in and out on a bus than in a car on Friday night.  I really don't want to go by myself but I will if I have to.  I haven't been out with any of my friends for about a month now and I want to get out and do something, so I thought this might be that something.  If any of you want to join me, give me a buzz on Facebook or give me a call.

 -  Song on repeat:  "Say Say Say" by Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson.  Can you believe it's been one whole year since Michael Jackson passed away?  I can't believe it myself, but it is what it is.  I picked this song in particular because, according to Billboard, this song is the most popular Michael Jackson song ever, beating out "Billie Jean" and even "Thriller."  No, I can't explain it either, but in any case I like the song and I wanted to note the first anniversary of the King of Pop's passing in a meaningful way.

 -  SLP to the following:  Ernest P., Dave, Jay, Al, Holly, Daryl, Betsy (congrats on winning an Emmy), Ernest W., Todd and Laura (congrats on your newborn, Jackson), Mike T., Steve (happy b-day), and Art (happy b-day).

I'm writing this VERY late at night because I can't sleep right now and I had a lot to cover.  I hope that people want to take me up on my idea for Red, White, and BOOM!, but in any case if I don't see you or hear from you before the holiday, I want to wish everybody Happy Independence Day.  Until next time, folks.  Take care and God Bless.

Random Thoughts #80 - the "justice" edition

Hello and welcome to another round of Random Thoughts from me, myself, and I.  I have a few things I can share, so I thought I would go ahead and do so today.  Let's get to it, shall we?  Enjoy.

 -  Before I start today, I wanted to share with you what's generally been going on with me.  It hasn't been the greatest or easiest of times for me personally.  I've been under the weather almost the entire time since the last blog.  With the weather changing constantly over that period, my sinuses have been going haywire so I haven't been too active physically.  My mood hasn't been all that great either, for various reasons.  I've been just lying low, keeping to myself, and not going out or doing much socially until I feel better...or at least feel less cranky and less depressed.  It's been really rough, to say the least.  I'm hoping things will turn around soon, with more stable weather coming up over the next few days (namely, sun and warmth) and a couple of activities coming up over the next week or two (one confirmed) that I'm looking forward to.  Prayers that things improve sooner than later are welcome.

 -  I'm calling this edition the "justice" edition because of something that I and many others have been following for some time now.  Somebody I knew growing up in Tallmadge was murdered a couple of years ago during a traffic stop.  His name was Josh Miktarian and he lived literally a few miles down the street where I grew up.  I went to school with Josh (a couple of grades behind me) and his brother Paul (a grade ahead of me).  During the summer months he would go swimming at Maca Pool along with a lot of us kids.  I've even been to his house a couple of times.  I hadn't seen him since I graduated high school, but I knew him to be one of the coolest guys I'd ever met.  Basically, he was one of the good guys.  He became a police officer serving the city of Twinsburg.  If you've been keeping up with the news in Northeast Ohio, you probably already know what happened.  For those who don't know, back in 2008 he was conducting a traffic stop when the guy he was dealing with pulled out a gun and shot him point blank in the head.  After Josh collapsed to the ground, he was shot three more times.  He was just doing his duty as an officer of the law and this guy killed him in cold blood.  This guy's trial ended last week and he was convicted of aggravated murder with the jury recommending the death penalty as his sentence (it's not official just yet...the judge still has to rule on the jury's recommendation).

I have several thoughts on all of this.  First of all, I'm not sure if I did this or not, but if not I want to pass on my condolences to Josh's wife Holly, his daughter Thea, and the rest of the Miktarian family for their loss.  As many who knew him could tell you, Josh was a great guy, hands down.  He had a big heart and he was one of the friendliest people out there.  Josh did not deserve this fate.  The guy who did this to him deserves the harshest punishment that could be handed down.  With this in mind, I find myself conflicted.  As a general rule, I am not a believer in the death penalty.  I can't bring myself to believe that the taking of one life justifies the taking of another.  I truly believe that "eye for an eye" ultimately does not work in the greater scheme of things.  Don't get me wrong...what this guy did makes my blood boil and makes me real angry, as it has for many who knew Josh.  Like I stated earlier, the guy deserves the harshest punishment possible for what he did.  I can see why the jury...and many others...believe the death penalty should be carried out, and it even makes some sense in my head since it was a jury that determined this guy's fate.  However, in my heart and as a Christian, I just can't bring myself to believe that killing anyone is justice.  Even if the death penalty is confirmed, it's likely that this guy could still be in prison for another ten to twenty years as he awaits his execution.  For the life of me I just cannot reconcile or justify killing someone as justice for any crime, even as one as horrific as this one, no matter how much I try.  My ultimate hope and prayer here is that, regardless of my own personal views, the Miktarian family finds some peace and that we will all see Josh again one day.  Rest in peace, Josh.

 -  Changing the tone from the last blurb, it looks like I will be back with the Westerville Browns Backers for Browns games this year.  I wasn't sure if I was going to be moving away from the area, but it looks like I'll be staying here a while longer where I'm at.  I'm looking forward to hanging out at Jimmy V's with my fellow Browns Backers.  Preseason is just around the corner in August so if anybody is interested in joining up, give me a buzz.

 -  In sporting news, it looks like several colleges are changing conferences.  Colorado and Utah are joining the Pac-10 conference and Nebraska has joined the Big Ten, making it a 12-team conference.  Two of those three schools were once part of the Big 12, putting it on the brink of extinction.  As of now, it looks like the Big 12 will stay intact with only 10 teams in the conference, leading me to believe that it's sole purpose now is to serve the University of Texas' whims and to get them to the mythical football national championship (BCS be damned, it's still mythical in my book without a playoff).  It also looks like the Big Ten will have a football title game to determine it's official champion thanks to the realignment.  2011 looks to be an interesting year in college sports.

 -  I caught the TNA Slammiversary PPV this past Sunday.  Slammiversary is the annual celebration of the founding of Total Nonstop Action Wrestling.  It was an okay yet solid PPV this year and Tommy Dreamer showed up (confirming he's now a part of TNA).  It does continue a string of solid PPV shows for TNA, something I cannot say for WWE though I am digging this NXT angle that's been going on the past couple of weeks.

 -  If you haven't noticed already, I've made some changes to the look and feel of the blog.  The layout is generally the same though the font sizes have changed to some degree.  I've also placed a new title picture at the top which I created myself (and it looks real good if I do say so myself).  My goal was to clean up the look of the blog to make it more aesthetically pleasing and I hope I accomplished that here.

 -  Song on repeat:  "Can You Picture That" by Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem.  This is from the Muppet Movie, a flick I enjoyed, and it is my favorite song from it.

 -  SLP to the following:  Ryan (happy birthday), Holly, Dave, Daryl, Ernest, Bob & Lynn, Griff, Julie (happy b-day), Heidi (happy b-day), Eldina (happy b-day), and Aunt Sandy.

That's it for this go-round.  Next time I hope to have even more of my opinions and views to share with you.  Until next time, folks.  Take care and God Bless.

Random Thoughts #79 - the "not right" edition

Hello and welcome back to another round of Random Thoughts from yours truly.  It's been somewhat eventful since the last blog entry, so I'm back with more things to share.  With that in mind, let's get to it.  Enjoy.

 -  In another step in this new beginning of mine, I've decided it's time to put behind me a troublesome chapter in my life that started a little less than a year ago with a mildly controversial blog.  I'm not gonna talk about that blog in particular, but in closing this chapter I want to reflect on some of what has happened since I wrote it.  For a few months I had to keep to myself and regain my bearings because all the stuff that happened really threw me for a loop.  I had the impression that some people felt the exact same way one particular person did and I lumped them together as one group whenever I described them.  Around Christmastime of last year, events occurred that led me to question how I was handling all this which I talked about in the "new beginning" entry on X-Mas itself.  More specifically I wasn't sure whether or not I made a mistake in believing that this one person's opinion reflected what the rest of the group truly felt.  In the months following Christmas I got the chance to speak with some of them.  It turns out I did make that mistake.  On top of that, it turns out they didn't even know...and were surprised at...what this person said that caused me to react the way I did.  I made the mistake in not talking to them individually about this when I should have, at least face to face soon after this stuff went down, and I ended up hurting them and making things more difficult for myself.  I believe I've apologized in person to three of them for my actions...at least I think I did, but if not I am apologizing now publicly to them and at least one more here in today's blog.  I don't think anybody knows how happy I am that the people I conversed with are now back in my life or how happy I am in not being right about that belief I held previously (hence the subject of this edition).

 -  I do have one more thing to say about this before this chapter closes on a separate yet somewhat related tangent.  As a general rule I take people at their word and believe in the best in people.  I put a lot of trust and faith in the people around me and those I meet including my friends, my family, and various other people as well.  I am aware that I run the risk of potentially being burned, spurned, or even having some turn their back to me, but for good or ill that part of me will never change.  Given that, whenever I perceive that risk becoming real I do my best to get away from those who plan or do such stuff to me the best I can.  It can get sloppy and messy on my part because I'm not proficient in separating from those I put such a personal investment in.  To be honest, I have no desire to be proficient at it because having such a proficiency is like having a drug habit...if you don't have it you don't do it, but if you do, you end up doing it more than you should.  Take for example that particular person I mentioned in the last blurb.  For a long time I thought I could put my trust and faith in this person and take them at their word.  When all this stuff went down and it was all said and done, I ultimately realized I was mistaken in doing so.  As a consequence that person lost my trust and friendship.  Something my pastor talks to me about regularly is the changing of seasons...not seasons like spring or fall, but seasons as periods in our lives that aren't limited by a set amount of time.  He would remind me that all seasons do naturally end at some point, though many seasons may last for decades or even longer.  For example, the end of the friendship with that person I was talking about was the ending of a season.  And now it is time for that season that started last June with a single blurb to end...time to move on and move forward from it.

 -  Sometimes I have the worst luck around Memorial Day weekend or even a day or two after.  It doesn't happen often but when it does it's noticable (my freshman year at OSU comes to mind).  This year something did happen...the place I've been hanging out at, Martini Park at Easton, closed its doors for good yesterday.  Granted, it's not apocalyptic, but I was just starting to get used to the place and my friends were starting to go there themselves more regularly.  That's two of my hangouts I've lost in the span of three months time (Martini Park and the OC)...just my luck, though my luck hasn't been the greatest lately anyway.

 -  Last Saturday night I did go out, this time to one of my old haunts, Screaming Willie's.  For those of you who don't remember, it used to be known as Bourbon St. (the hip hop side still is) and Club Dance.  It was just me and Al, but we kicked it old school (LOL).  We had a decent time, though I feel bad that I told a couple women about Martini Park and now the place is closed.

 -  I love warm weather and 80's.

 -  Red, White, And BOOM (Columbus' Independence Day celebration) is on July 2nd this year, a Friday.  If anybody's up for going this year, give me a buzz.  I haven't done the fireworks thing with friends in years, so it might be something worth doing.  Anybody up for it?

 -  As most of you regular readers know, I do something called "SLP" in my blogs.  For those of you who do not know what it means, it stands for "Shoutouts, Love, and Props."  It could be for anything from simple acknowledgements to full-blown hanging out.  Someone asked me about it, so I thought since there's a lot of new people reading my blogs I'd better let them and anybody else know what it meant.

 -  Song on repeat:  "Rock The Casbah" by The Clash.  It's literally been the song I've had repeating on my music player.

 -  SLP to the following:  Ernest, Holly, Walt (happy b-day), Dave, Jay, Ernest, Al, Griff, Angie & Jennifer (from Screaming Willie's), Dwight, Jennifer S. (happy b-day), Jim, Cheryl, Robert N., and Tony.

Right now I am typing this up while I'm really tired and a bit grumpy.  Yes, I know it's the middle of the day, but that's how I feel right now.  If some of what I wrote today comes off wordy, repetitive, or confusing, that's why.  Anyway, I'd better go take a nap.  I've got a new season to start and a new beginning to keep going.  Until next time, folks.  Take care and God Bless.
